OUR CLOGGING STORY

The Hickory Flat Hoedowners are a traditional Southern Appalachian clogging and precision dance group based in Denton, North Carolina, formed on February 3, 1985, by Elliott Skeen, a nationally recognized instructor who learned from pioneers like Glen Nance, Bill Nichols, Garland Steel, and Bob Johnson. The group consists of dancers ranges in all ages, organized into multiple age divisions, with the Adult team holding various National Traditional Championship titles for America's Clogging Hall of Fame and National Clogging and Hoedown Council. They have won many consecutive national titles in events such as Kentucky Running Set Hoedown, Country Hoedown, and Southern Appalachian Clogging from 1985 to present. The team is co-directed by Cheryl and Elliott Skeen.

The group performs hour-long shows featuring traditional clogging and precision dance, often accompanied by live bluegrass music or their own recordings, and also provides square dance calling for audience participation. They have performed at notable events, including the Capitol Steps in Washington, D.C., the opening ceremonies of the Olympic Festival in Raleigh, North Carolina, and halftime shows for NFL games. They continue to perform at regional festivals, fiddler’s conventions, and community events across the East Coast.
